  8. This file contains information not included in printed form or in the help

  11. DEMONSTRATION VERSION
  12. ---------------------
  13.  
  14. Welcome.  The demo versions of this radio control package is fully working 
  15. with the following two exceptions:
  16.  
  17. 1. The File|Save... and File|Save As... options are disabled
  18. 2. The program runs for 10 minute periods before exiting
  19.  
  20. To install the demonstration, you just need to unzip the distibution file
  21. (if appropriate) and run the INSTALL.EXE program.  All the distribution
  22. files will be copied into a directory on your hard disk.  Note, no files
  23. will be copied into your Windows directory and your system INI files will
  24. not be edited.  This makes removal of the demo simple.
  25.

  50. NEW AR5000 HARDWARE FEATURES
  51. ----------------------------
  52.  
  53. The RS-232 command set was revised in March 1997 to support new 
  54. hardware features: AFC, synchronous AM and a noise blanker.  This
  55. software supports these new features, however, if you do not have
  56. these features on your AR5000 the software will still work.  Any 
  57. RS-232 commands not supported by your AR5000 hardware are be 
  58. ignored.
  59.  
  60. To check if your AR5000 supports the new features, you can try the 
  61. following experiment.  Launch Windows Terminal using the AR5000.TRM
  62. file provided with this package (note, some adjustment to the serial
  63. port parameters may be required).
  64.  
  65. 1. Automatic Frequency control (AFC)
  66.  
  67. Type "AF0<enter>" and observe the resonse.  If it is a "?" character
  68. you do not have AFC.
  69.  
  70. 2. Synchronous AM
  71.  
  72. Type "MD5<enter>" and observe the response. If it is a "?" character
  73. you do not have SAM.
  74.  
  75. 3. Noise blanker
  76.  
  77. Type "NB0<enter>" and observe the response.  If it is a "?" character
  78. you do not have a noise blanker.
  79.  
  80. There is no indication in hardware on the AR5000 when the noise 
  81. blanker is active, however the AR5000 Tuner software on your PC
  82. is able to make use of the unused "PRIO" indicator in the front
  83. panel window and replace it with an "NB" indicator.
  84.  
  85.  
  86. AOR CLOCK
  87. ---------
  88.  
  89. This program needs a Windows system that supports Win32s.  You can
  90. run AOR Clock on any Windows 3.x system that has Win32s installed or
  91. under Windows 95 (with no additional software installed).
  92.  
  93. Windows 95 determines when daylight saving time is recognised by your
  94. system.  AOR Clock uses this information to display the correct value
  95. of GMT.  The default daylight saving offset is -60 minutes, but you can
  96. edit the CLOCK.INI file to include a different offset time if necessary.
  97.  
  98. In the CLOCK.INI file, you will find the following:
  99.  
  100. [Daylight]
  101. offset=-60
  102.  
  103. where the daylight saving offset is show in minutes.  Use NOTEPAD to
  104. alter the offset for your geographical location.
  105.  
  106.  
  107. COPY PROTECTION (not demo version)
  108. ---------------
  109.  
  110.         AOR software is copy protected using a system which places a 
  111. token on your hard disk when you install the program.  The program will 
  112. only work on the disk you installed it to.  There is no dongle or 
  113. key-disk, so once installed the program runs completely normally and you 
  114. will not be inconvenienced (unlike other schemes).  However, you cannot
  115. DISKCOPY the distrubution disk or duplicate it with COPY commands.
  116.  
  117. Specific points to remember:
  118.  
  119. 1. The distribution disk contains two tokens.  This means that you can 
  120. install up to two complete copies of the software on separate machines 
  121. at once.  You cannot transfer the program to another machine without 
  122. first moving one of the tokens back onto the original distribution disk 
  123. then re-installing.  The tokens can easily be moved with the MOVE.EXE 
  124. program that is provided.  Contact your AOR distributor if you need 
  125. additional copies of the software.
  126.  
  127. 2. You should keep your original disk in a safe place away from strong 
  128. magnetic fields, high humidity or other environmental conditions that 
  129. could damage it.  You will not be able to re-install the software or move 
  130. it to another machine without the original distribution disk.
  131.  
  132. 3. Two hidden files are copied to a hidden subdirectory of the target
  133. directory when you install the software.  These contain configuration
  134. information for the copy protection scheme and are normal DOS format files.
  135. DO NOT DELETE THESE FILES UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.  If these files are
  136. deleted, your AOR software will not run.
  137.  
  138. 4. If you are using a backup utility, make sure that the two hidden files 
  139. are not backed up otherwise, when restored, the copy protection scheme may 
  140. not be able to validate the installation and your AOR software will not run.  
  141. Most backup utilities do not touch these files because they have the hidden, 
  142. system and read-only attributes set.  The two copy protection files also do 
  143. not have the archive bit set, so you should be able to exclude them from 
  144. backups by setting up your backup software to ignore files without an 
  145. archive bit.  Remember, it is not the backup but the restore that can 
  146. cause problems.

  148. 5. The /d+ option of the PC-Kwik disk cache software from Multisoft 
  149. Corporation is not compatible with the copy protection scheme and should be 
  150. temporarily disabled when installing your AOR software or moving the token.  
  151. HyperCache also affects the copy protection scheme in the same way because 
  152. of non-standard methods of accessing the floppy disk drive.  Again, it 
  153. should be temporarily disabled, but both caches may be used at other times.
  154.  
  155. 6. The copy protection scheme is compatible with disk drives compressed with 
  156. SuperStor, Stacker and DoubleSpace.  However, you should temporarily remove 
  157. the token from the hard disk when installing one of these compression 
  158. utilities because the protection will appear invalid when the drives are 
  159. compressed.  The disk compression utilities warn you of this in their manuals.
  160.  
  161. 7.  The copy protection scheme is known to be compatible with the following 
  162. disk defragmenters: Central PointÆs Compress, Digital Research's Diskopt, 
  163. Stac's Sdefrag and Microsoft's Defrag.
  164.  
  165. 8.  The copy protection scheme is not currently compatible with Windows NT.
  166.  
  167. 9.  The copy protection scheme is not compatible with non-standard floppy
  168. disk systems.  At present (7/95) this includes the following PCs:
  169.  
  170.     Evesham Vale Voyager laptop
  171.     Zeos Pentiums
  172.  
  173. It is possible to install onto a PC with a non-standard floppy disk (or no
  174. floppy disk) using a networked standard drive.  The easiest way to do this
  175. if you do not already have a network is to use the INTERLNK or INTERSVR
  176. utilities supplied with MS-DOS.
  177.  
  178. 10.  The copy protection scheme is compatible with Windows 95.  However,
  179. you can completely erase your tokens using Explorer to drag and drop the
  180. AOR directory onto the Recycle bin.  Although the token files are
  181. not deleted, they cannot be restored to their original positions on disk.
  182. EXPLORER DOES NOT GIVE WARNINGS LIKE FILE MANAGER UNDER WINDOWS 3.X!.
  183.  
  184. 11. Some problems with deleted token have been reported using Norton Speed
  185. Disk.
  186.  
  187.  
  188. USING SCREEN SAVERS
  189. -------------------
  190.  
  191. Some screen savers may interfere with your AOR software when they first
  192. operate.  Under some circumstances a run time error can occur because of the 
  193. addition of extra system resources that these screen savers demand.  For 
  194. reliable operation over long periods, screen savers should be disabled.
